Why Choose a Macerating Toilet System?
A macerating toilet system is essential when connecting a traditional gravity-flush toilet to a main sewer line is difficult or not possible — such as in basements, garages, or remote additions. Saniflo’s macerating systems offer an ideal solution in these cases.
How a Macerating Toilet Works (Also Known as a Saniflo System)
The operation is simple: when the toilet is flushed, water and waste are drawn in, macerated (ground up), and pumped through a small-diameter pipe to the main sewer line.
Saniflo systems use either a stainless steel blade, a high-performance impeller, or a grinding wheel powered by an electric motor. Adaptable macerators typically use a blade system, while compact all-in-one units use impellers or grinders.
Adaptable Macerating Units
Adaptable macerators are compact boxes that discreetly connect behind a standard toilet. Inside, a powerful motor activates a blade or impeller to break down waste and pump it through small-diameter piping.
Activation is automatic when the toilet is flushed. Some models, such as the Saniflo SaniPLUS or SaniACCESS 3, even allow additional connections like a sink, bidet, or shower — perfect for full or half-bathroom additions.
Installation Requirements
Installing a Saniflo macerating unit is straightforward, but the following are required:
A floor-mounted or wall-hung toilet connected to a water supply with a shut-off valve.
A grounded electrical outlet nearby.
A discharge pipe (¾” to 1.5” PVC, depending on the unit) connected to the main waste line.
Once set up, connect the macerator behind the toilet, attach the discharge elbow to the PVC line, and plug it in — you now have a fully functional toilet system.
Note: All Saniflo macerators include a built-in non-return valve to prevent backflow and false starts.
Tips for Optimal Performance
Maintenance
Only flush toilet paper. Avoid wipes, feminine hygiene products, or any foreign objects.
Use a Saniflo-approved descaler every few months to clean the pump and reduce limescale buildup.
Soundproofing
Place a vibration-absorbing mat under the unit to reduce motor noise.
Avoid direct contact between the macerator and the rear wall.
Secure the discharge piping using rubber-lined anti-vibration pipe clips, spaced about every 3 feet.
Vertical Pumping Performance
Minimize the number of pipe bends in the discharge line.
Use two 45° elbows instead of a 90° elbow to improve flow and pumping height.
Dedicated Discharge Line
Do not connect any other appliances to the macerator’s discharge pipe. It must be dedicated to the unit.
